A Signature Cocktail Inspiration: Ginger Grapefruit & Bazil Spritzer

I love all things related to grapefruit so this "mocktail" is like heaven in a glass for me. Not to mention, gorgeous when served in the perfect crystal stemware with a sprig of bright green basil and a slice of grapefruit. If you're looking for a good time, spike it with some vodka or top it with some sparkling wine.

Cheers!

A Signature Cocktail Inspiration - Orange Mint Julep

It's Friday afternoon...
definitely 5 o'clock somewhere...
a three day holiday weekend...
and almost 70 degrees in San Francisco!

I feel it's only appropriate to post a delicious signature cocktail inspiration.

Since we are deep in the details of many of our summer weddings this season, I'm sharing a cocktail that's fitting for a warm summer day but also packs a punch for the gentleman.

The Orange-Mint Julep is a twist on a classic Mint Julep cocktail but refined enough to serve for any chic affair. This drink is best served during any high point of the citrus season when the fruit it ripe and bright.

As with all details of your wedding, it's all about the presentation - the crystal, the garnish and display. I love the little handheld bottle basket these gorgeous amber glasses that are presented in shown in the image above.

Orange Mint Julep
2/3 cups of sugar
1 cup snipped fresh Mint
1 teaspoon shredded orange peel
2 cups orange juice
2/3 cups lemon juice
1/3 cups of Bourbon (or Vodka)
2 cups water

Directions: Mix sugar and water in a saucepan. Bring to a boil, stirring until sugar dissolves. Remove from heat; pour over mint leaves. Stir in orange peel, orange juice and lemon juice. Cover. Let stand at room temp for one hour. Strain mixture through a mesh strainer and add liquor. Cover and chill up to 24 hours. Serve over crush iced and garnish with a sprig of mint and slice of a ripe orange.

Cheers!

Signature Cocktail Inspiration - The Perfect Champagne Cocktail

Photo Credit: Tia & Claire Studios

In my opinion, it's not a party until you hear a champagne bottle pop.

As a wedding planner, I always advise clients to make at least one of their signature cocktails a champagne cocktail. To me, it's just a touch of simple glamour and elegance made easy. There is something regal about seeing silver trays filled with gorgeous crystal flutes being passed around to guests during a reception.

When we design signature cocktails for clients, we always elevate it a notch by adding something special to enhance it. In the image above, we loved adding a special sprig of fresh lavender to a glass of Schramsberg Blanc de Blanc from our Calistoga Ranch wedding last December.

Looking for the perfect the perfect champagne cocktail? Try one of our favorites below.

Lavender Champagne Cocktail:
- 1 1/2 teaspoons of Lavender infused simple syrup
- 7 ounces of ice chilled champagne, sparkling wine or Presecco

In a beautiful crystal flute, add Lavender infused simple syrup followed by your choice of bubbles. Place one fresh sprig of Lavender stem first into each flute. Voila!

Cheers,
Simone

A Signature Cocktail Inspiration: Winter Sun

Not all signature cocktails during the winter months have to match the holidays' "sugar and spice" theme to feel celebratory. This delicious and colorful spirit will add a citrus punch to your wedding.

Here's a little cocktail confection to brighten even the most dreary winter day. Clementine juice and a touch of lemon combine with vodka for a bright and happy drink. A sprig of rosemary adds a whiff of wintry evergreen.

Ingredients:

  • juice of 2 clementines (about 1/4 cup)
  • juice of 1/2 small lemon (1/2 oz)
  • 1/2 oz triple sec
  • 1 1/2 oz vodka
  • sprig of rosemary
  • lemon zest
  • sugar
Preparation:
Moisten the rim of your glass with some fruit juice. (The juice helps the sugar to adhere better than water does.) Combine zest and sugar in a shallow bowl or plate. Turn the glass over onto plate and coat with sugar. 2. Pour juices, triple sec, and vodka into a shaker. Shake and then pour over ice. Garnish with rosemary sprig.

Cheers!

A Signature Cocktail Inspiration: Cranberry Cobbler

We are in the middle of our Indian Summer here in San Francisco so all of us natives are certainly enjoying this last bit of late summer warmth. However, in a couple of weeks we'll all have our winter sweaters on and will start looking towards the holiday season.

Here are Soiree, we are gearing up and getting excited about our upcoming holiday weddings to cap off our amazing season. For us, we welcome the change of scenery. After executing so many gorgeous spring and summer outdoor garden and ranch weddings, we're looking forward to stepping inside the legendary Julia Morgan Ballroom, the Presidio's Golden Gate Club and a candle lit wine cave at Calistoga Ranch

One of the many details we're fine tuning with clients heading into their holiday season weddings are their signature cocktails. The trick is to select one that matches the season but doesn't scream Christmas. Just because you're getting married in December, doesn't mean you have to add a candy cane in your drinks to feel festive. After all, it's still your wedding and not a holiday party.

If you like Cranberry like I do, try this delicious spirit called the Cranberry Cobbler

Ingredients:

  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1 cup fresh or frozen cranberries
  • 1 lemon, cut into wedges
  • 1/2 orange, sliced into thin rounds
  • 1 1/2 cups London dry gin (such as Beefeater or Tanqueray)
  • 1/2 cup plus 1 Tbsp. off-dry Sherry (such as Lustau East India Solera)
  • 6 mint sprigs

  • Preparation
Bring sugar and 3/4 cup water to a boil in a medium saucepan; stir until sugar is dissolved. Remove from heat. Pour off all but 1 cup simple syrup; refrigerate remaining syrup for another use.

Heat syrup in pan almost to a boil; reduce heat to medium. Add cranberries and simmer until they just begin to burst, 2–3 minutes. Let cool in syrup.

Place 2 Tbsp. drained cranberries and 6 Tbsp. cranberry syrup in a large pitcher. Add lemon wedges and orange slices. Using a muddler or wooden spoon, vigorously mash fruit. Stir in gin and Sherry. Let steep for 5 minutes.

Strain into a medium pitcher. Fill 3 glasses with crushed ice. Pour half of mixture into a cocktail shaker. Fill with ice; shake vigorously for 10 seconds. Strain into prepared glasses, then mound with more crushed ice. Garnish each with a mint sprig and 3 cranberries. Repeat to make 3 more cocktails

    Cheers!

A Signature Cocktail Inspiration - Champagne Julep

Signature cocktails are a big part of any cocktail hour and selecting the right one entails more than just than picking your favorite liquor. If you are planning your wedding, then you know its all about the details...including your signature cocktail.

When selecting what you want to serve your guests, think about a few things -

    1) What time of year is it? If it's in the summer months and weather is hot, try and select something refreshing and easy to drink.

    2) What is seasonal and fresh? It's always important to select a cocktail that can incorporate the amazing produce that's available in the surrounding area. It matches both the region you're hosting the wedding in and also adds a delicious and original twist to a common beverage.

    3) Presentation. Again, it's all about the details and you want it to look beautiful. Speak with your caterers about the best possible presentation and start looking at crystal stemware, cute mason jars or cocktail glasses that will wow your guests. Also, don't forget how they are served. Many caterers employ bartenders who can show a little showmanship. Also, if it's a fancy affair, pretty vintage or silver trays for passed service will elevate the formality of the presentation.

I fell in love with this Champagne Mint Julep (pictured above) signature cocktail. Nothings says "celebration" like champagne, and with a twist of Gin and some mint in beautiful crystal, it's just superb.

    1940's Champagne Julep:
    1/2 ounce Simple Syrup
    2 ounces chilled Champagne
    4 torn mint leaves
    Dash of Angostura Bitter
    Ice cubes and crushed ice
    1 ounce fino sherry
    1/4 ounce fresh lemon juice

Fill a cocktail shaker with ice cubes. Add the mint, bitters, sherry, Simple Syrup and lemon juice and shake well. Strain into a flute half-filled with crushed ice and top with the Champagne.

    Enjoy!

Signature Cocktail Inspired by the Fall Season - Apple Pie

I can't believe it's almost November (it feels like we were just having our April showers yesterday!) which means we're in full swing of everything Fall. Gorgeous harvest produce, tree leaves turning beautiful colors, the evening chill and talk of the holidays.

Some of my most favorite weddings happen in the Fall with color schemes of neutral tones and browns with pops of orange, red and yellow. Warm soups made from harvest squash, salads with delicious apples and warm nuts, and dinners of roasted game and root vegetables. Meals that warm us inside made from generational recipes. That's my kind of Fall.

If you know me, you know by now that I love a good Signature Cocktail. When it comes to selecting a cocktail for your wedding day, always select what is in season. Seasonal ingredients are going to be the most delicious and cost-effective, and whatever you do, don't be afraid of being creative with the presentation. After all, weddings are all about the details.

Here is a fabulous Fall inspired cocktail to serve at a wedding or any Fall celebration or party:

    Apple Pie Cocktail

    Apple Pie

    Ingredients:
    • 2 apple slices
    • 1/2 oz. agave nectar

    • 1 1/2 oz. Core vodka (Hudson Valley Apples)
    • Thinly sliced red apple, for garnish

    Directions:

    • Add ice and vodka and shake well.
    • Strain over ice in an old-fashioned glass.
    • Garnish with thinly sliced red apple.

    Enjoy!!

Selecting a Summer Wedding Signature Cocktail

This past weekend I met with one of my June brides to put the final touches on her decor and talk logistics during our one-month-out planning review. I just have to say first off that I absolutely adore this bride - she's a total stunner with a fabulous style and is as sweet as sugar - you know, a prototypical wedding planner's dream. As a fashion stylist in Los Angeles, her vision and sense of color are fantastic and my team is super excited to pull it all together for her big day.

One of the final touches that we discussed was what to design for her Signature Cocktail. Since she loves the feeling of Hollywood glamor but her personality is bubbly and down-to-earth, it only fits that we would create one using champagne. Since her wedding is at the beginning of summer where the weather will be warm, we wanted to create something refreshing yet seasonal for her guests to enjoy. We decided to create a delicious sparkling cocktail using Blood Orange juice, sparkling wine and Mint. It's got glamorous effervescence from the bubbles, it boasts a gorgeous red edge from the Blood Orange juice and the essence of refreshing Mint. It's beautiful to look at, tastes delicious, feels glamorous and smells amazing - all bases covered. Check!

Signature Cocktails Are Important to Your Theme & Wedding Style
Though it doesn't seem like a big deal, it definitely is. A Signature Cocktail is an important component to your event theme because it's always a topic of conversation during the cocktail hour. It's about presentation, personal style and aesthetic - how can it not be important?

    Signature Cocktail Misconceptions
For some reason there is a misconception that if you aren't hosting a full-bar, you can't have a Signature Cocktail. So not the case! I always advise my couples who aren't hosting a full-service bar to create a Signature Cocktail using Champagne or wine as the base. That way if the cocktail does require a flavored liquor, it's not much more than 1/2 an ounce (splash) per serving so the small splurge won't break the bank.

If you are getting married in the summer months at an outdoor venue, more than likely your guests would prefer to drink something refreshing over something potent and strong. Try incorporating fruit from local farmers from the area to keep it delicious and seasonal.

Remember, Signature Cocktails are all about presentation so don't forget about adding great details such as custom stirrers, edible flowers and delicious garnishes.

Things to Think About When Designing Your Signature Cocktail
    • Color
    • Taste
    • Scent
    • Presentation
    • Name

Earlier this week I asked Martha Stewart Weddings via Twitter what this summer's hottest summer time cocktails were. Here are what they are loving this summer:

    Blackberry Gin Fiz
With a burst of bright berry puree and just a tickle of effervescence, this warm-weather quencher -- a bold update on the old-fashioned gin fizz -- lets guests drink in the essence of summer.

    Ingredients:
12 ounces blackberries, plus more for garnish
    2 tablespoons superfine sugar
    3 tablespoons fresh lime juice
    6 ounces gin
15 mint leaves, torn, plus sprigs for garnish
    1 1/2 cups seltzer
    (Serves 6)

    Directions:
Put 1/3 cup puree, 1 tablespoon lime juice, 2 ounces gin, and 1/3 of the torn mint leaves into a cocktail shaker filled with ice, and shake until cold. Pour into two 8-ounce glasses, and add 1/4 cup seltzer to each. Repeat twice. Garnish with berries and mint sprigs.

    Electric Watermelon Lemonade
A refreshing and cooling twist on lemonade. This recipe for watermelon lemonade is sure to be a crowd pleaser and is perfect to serve at a wedding during the summer months.

    Ingredients:
    2 lemons, quartered
    1 cup fresh mint leaves
    1/2 cup packed light-brown sugar
1/2 medium seedless watermelon (about 9 pounds), rind removed, flesh cut into chunks
    1 cup vodka
    (Serves 6)

    Directions:
Squeeze lemons into a large pitcher; add squeezed lemon quarters. Add mint and sugar; mash with a wooden spoon until mint is bruised and sugar is dissolved. In a blender, puree watermelon in batches until smooth; pour through a fine-mesh sieve into pitcher (you should have about 8 cups of juice). Stir to combine. (Refrigerate, covered, up to 3 days.) Add vodka, serve over ice

    Cucumber-Mint Gimlet
Serve the ultimate country-club libation: gimlets. Swap out vodka and Rose's lime juice for cucumber gin, fresh lime, and simple syrup tinged with mint.

    Ingredients:
4 1/2 cups Cucumber Gin (or 2 oz.), how-to follows
2 1/4 cups fresh lime juice (or 1 oz.)
1 cup plus 2 tablespoons Mint Simple Syrup (or 1/2 oz.), how-to follows
    Cucumber peels, for garnish
    Fresh mint sprigs, for garnish
    (serves 6)

    Directions:
In a 2-quart pitcher, stir gin, lime juice, and syrup. Refrigerate. To serve, pour into a cocktail shaker filled with ice, shake vigorously, and divide among ice-filled 10-ounce glasses. (For a single drink, mix in a cocktail shaker filled with ice, and shake.) Garnish each with cucumber peel and mint.

    Lavender Champagne
I adore this simple, yet beautiful cocktail using a sprig of fresh lavender as a garnish. Remember, use organic fresh sprigs for this drink.

    Ingredients:
    1/2 cup sugar
    1 tablespoon dried lavender
4 bottles (750 mL) dry Champagne or sparkling wine chilled
    Fresh lavender sprigs, for garnish
    (Serves 16)

    Directions:
Bring sugar and 1/2 cup water to a boil in a saucepan, stirring to dissolve sugar. Stir in dried lavender. Remove from heat. Let cool completely. Strain out lavender. Refrigerate syrup until ready to serve (up to 1 month).

Pour about 6 ounces Champagne and 1 1/2 teaspoons syrup into each flute. Garnish each with a lavender sprig

It's all about the small and beautiful details, don't forget to create something that reflects your style, taste and venue.

    Enjoy and happy planning!
